the sentinel fan fiction

While Highlander: The Series was the show that introduced me to slash, The Sentinel was the one that introduced me to fandom. The Sentinel was huge, central and well-organized with its archive and the mailing lists [Senad] and [SXF] and in its heyday reeled in pretty much everybody. Its most dedicated and prolific authors are now BNFs one encounters sooner or later in a variety of other fandoms. It also introduced a lot of additional fannish features such as unofficial continuations of the show in form of virtual seasons, themed e-zines, writer critique (the disputed [Prospect-L]) and generally provided a structured online environment in which newcomers felt quickly welcomed. In contrast the show itself was not much to write home about with its mediocre writing, harebrained plots, superficial dialogue and "babes of the week". Nonetheless, the two main characters, Jim and Blair, had an undeniable rapport that jumped off the screen and intrigued its female audience, largely thanks to their actors who were well aware of the homoerotic subtext and jokingly played up to it in the show's bloopers. The buff, self-contained cop and the "hippy witchdoctor punk" anthropologist managed to transcend their archetypes and invited the creation of what is today still the internet's largest slash fandom.

The main pairing on this page is
Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg.

Title: Click-Click Story Length: ~ 27 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Post-Season 4
Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, Established Relationship Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: A rescue goes wrong.
Title: Rafe Missed *It* Story Length: ~ 19 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Season 3
Genres: Friendship, Humor, Romance Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: "IT" finally happened, but Rafe missed it so the gang at Major Crimes is going to fill him in... And since they are mostly drunk... well, coherent they ain't!
Review: alyjude is a very prolific writer and, despite her newer fascination with Stargate: SG-1, still very much involved in the Sentinel fandom. Her stories tend to be light-hearted, often fluffy, and the verbal exchanges between Jim and Blair are often written as banter. If you're in the mood for angst and drama, look elsewhere; if you want to smile (and perhaps search for some pretzels to throw), read her fiction.

Title: The Trigger Effect Story Length: ~ 110 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: rape, violence
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Pre-Season 4
Genres: Angst, Drama, Episode Related, First Time, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: A case from the early days of their partnership comes back to haunt Jim and Blair, with consequences that could be devastating.
Review: In Anna Monique's story Veronica Serris, the Switchman, reappears and captures former Captain Ellison and his partner to play a twisted game. Style and characterizations are good, but what convinced me most of all is Jim's role in this as former soldier, and cop. His Sentinel abilities are not ignored, but neither are they used as the story's main focus. Unfortunately, though the author assured me in 2000 that a sequel was in the works, she hasn't posted one yet, and therefore the storyline's resolution is still missing.

Title: These Earthly Cares Story Length: ~ 27 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Post-Season 3
Genres: Angst, Episode Related, Fix-It, Friendship Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Blair Knows Jim. Jim Knows Blair. Schmoop ensues.
Review: Brighid is a very prolific author who's been active in many fandoms. The Sentinel counts as one of her earlier ones, and her stories in it show only hints of the lyric qualities her more recent ones are so exemplary for. Unfortunately, as all of her works, both stories are relatively short, but they each deal with one of the show's major traumata, "Sentinel Too" and "The Sentinel by Blair Sandburg". Brighid shows us what we all hope happened off-screen - Jim and Blair getting over their problems by talking them through instead of dismissing them with a quick joke.

Title: The Diary Series [1], [2A], [2B], [3A], [3B], [3C], [3D], [4], [5], [6], [7A], [7B], [7C] (story index) offsite Story Length: ~ 1.364 KB

Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Pilot to Season 2 Finale, then AU
Genres: Angst, AU, Drama, First Time, Hurt/Comfort, Romance Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Two years into their friendship, Jim and Blair get together, but harassment at the station is just the first conflict their new relationship has to weather.
Review: Candy Apple's "Diary Series" introduced me to Sentinel slash and will always hold a special place in my heart. Admittedly its first two parts are essentially renarrations of seasons 1 and 2 (with an added dose of UST) and are therefore a bit boring for fans who've watched the respective episodes. Furthermore, Candy likes to put a lot of emphasis on the "in love" part of the J/B relationship which, in addition to the constant use of endearments, can become a bit much, but the series' conclusion is a perfectly written drama showcasing the fallout from a dangerous undercover assignment, and presents a vulnerable Jim that's without equal in the fandom. A classic, and a must-read.

Title: Angel of Death Story Length: ~ 40 KB

Category: gen Warnings: none
Pairing: none Time Frame: Post-Season 2
Genres: Angst, Drama, Friendship Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: An anti-death story: Blair doesn't let Jim die.
Review: cmshaw has written a lot of The Sentinel and Due South fan fiction, and I regret that she hasn't posted anything in a while. Her grasp of pre-"Sentinel Too" Jim and Blair is excellent, their rapport unshadowed by later developments on the show, and the sentinel-guide relationship is a matter of course. cmshaw's Blair doesn't doubt that he'll be able to reach Jim even when modern medicine has already pronounced him dead, and it's this unshakable confidence that makes this story a prime example of the kind of friendship this fandom stands for.

Summary: What would have happened if Jim never went to visit Blair at the university?
Review: Emily Brunson is the writer whose stories introduced me to The Sentinel. She's also the queen of character-whumping and of unfinished WiPs, but since all her work is undeniably well written and addictive, her readers deal with both with good grace. Her Jim usually suffers through realistically portrayed physical or emotional trauma, be it AIDS or paraplegia, or he works as a prostitute, or he's locked away as a misdiagnosed schizophreniac, but with Blair standing by him, not all hope is lost. Don't read her stories when you're feeling down. Otherwise, enjoy.

Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Season 2
Genres: Angst, First Time, PWP Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: The Sentinel-Guide relationship seems to have come to a sudden, irrevocable end when Jim is suddenly affected by Blair's pheromones.
Review: Francesca's best-known works in this fandom are certainly her "Nature Series" and its continuation, "Cycles", but this story has all what her novels have as well - a strong bond between Sentinel and Guide, and a friendship that survives the new intimacy thrust upon it. In fact, I prefer "The Object of my Erections", for here, Jim and Blair may be forced to re-evaluate their relationship due to a new obstacle raised by Jim's Sentinel senses, but their coming together is still less fraught by tension than in the "Nature Series". Francesca writes unbelievably well and has a very good grip of the characters, and soon successfully applied her writing skills to other fandoms.

Title: The Cure for the Common Zone-Out Story Length: ~ 50 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Pre-Season 3
Genres: Action/Adventure, First Time Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Blair discovers two whole new ways for Jim to zone out, and Jim figures out how to cure them.
Review: Brenda Antrim - in all her various personifications - tends to write long, dark, angsty stories that are usually not to my taste. This one is an exception in all respects. The characterizations are pre-Alex, the plot a bit clichéd, and there refreshingly is no expounding on the mystical component of the sentinel-guide relationship. All in all, this is a solid story set early in the series that allows Blair to be on the bottom without being transformed into a feminized version of himself. Well worth reading.

Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Pre-Season 4
Genres: Established Relationship, Humor Recommended: 09 Dec 2006
Summary: Blair gets ready for spring break.
Review: Griffin's two stories are light-hearted fun that present an intimate relationship between Jim and Blair as a given. The glimpses the reader is offered into said relationship work well without a backstory and allow the focus to remain solidly where the author clearly wants it to be - on what feels like an ordinary day in the lives of Jim and Blair. Tragicomic, sexy, humorous and yet tender. Nice.

Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex and violence
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Pre-Season 4
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, First Time, Pre-Relationship Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: An unexpected kiss used as a cover during an assignment leads to unexpected complications.
Review: Josephine's stories were one of my oldest loves and every time I come across them today, I am overwhelmed by nostalgia. "Choices" is what I would have loved to see on the show post-Alex, whereas Josephine's collection of fandom clichés in "Things You Learn From Slash" is so spot-on I'm usually in hysterics when I reach no. 110. "Without Love" is a prime example of her longer works. They are all very well written, but often a bit too emotional. Nonetheless, Josephine is very good at balancing Jim and Blair's characters and believably brings across Jim's repression while depicting him as being aware of it and having the capacity to overcome it after some soul searching. The tangible bond she paints between Jim and Blair is beautiful, but in places too reliant on their roles as Sentinel and Guide.

Series: none Rating: R
Category: gen Warnings: violence
Pairing: none Time Frame: Season 4
Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: That last mission to Peru once again rears its ugly head. Will Jim survive? Can his Guide help him?
Review: Just like Blair in this story, I've always felt that there was a big part of Jim Ellison's earlier life missing since we were never told details of the events leading up to Jim becoming stranded in Peru. Kandy remedies that lack by presenting us with a story set post-Alex in which a current murder case unburies Jim's repressed memories of the helicopter crash in which his entire team died. The story is well written, well researched, Jim gets to wear his uniform, and his teammates become more than a number when the reader encounters them as three-dimensional persons in Jim's flashbacks. The story's plot is structured believably, and due to the emphasis on the friendship between Jim and Blair, one hardly notices that this story is gen and not slash.

Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Post-Season 4
Genres: Angst, Drama, Episode Related, Fix-It, Friendship Recommended: 09 Dec 2006
Summary: Jim and Blair come to unexpected conclusions about their lives in the aftermath of "The Sentinel by Blair Sandburg".
Review: What I love about this story the most is the subdued strain of humor running through it. While its events are dramatic - Jim can't cope with Blair renouncing his life's work for his sake - Lanning also shows their humorous side. Her depiction of a drunken Jim is both hilarious and heartbreaking, however the reason for him attempting to drown his sorrows is certainly less than amusing. Lanning's characterizations are spot-on with her Jim guilt-ridden, generous and yet blind to the emotional repercussions of his actions, her Blair first subdued, then angry and furiously protective, and she takes the reader with her on a journey of discovery, seeking a resolution to the series' finale more faithful to the characters than the one we were presented with in canon.

Summary: Jim and Blair start a relationship enhanced by the subtle lure of leather and toys in play.
Review: When I first discovered Legion's "Too Hot To Handle" series, I was shocked and titillated by its explicitness. Legion writes the best detailed - and loving - sex scenes in this fandom while still succeeding in keeping Jim and Blair each other's equal. The author writes them "playing" as a way of dealing with the stress of their daily lives, and has them switch places with an ease and comfort that speaks of an unparalleled mutual trust and commitment. Jim being a Sentinel and his desire to protect his lover bleed into even their sexual interaction and read very true to the character. "Changeling", as well as Legion's other stories, are just as much a pleasure to read, although they tend to have a higher amount of plot and more interaction with the world outside their bedroom.

Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Pre-Season 4
Genres: Angst, First Time, Romance Recommended: 09 Dec 2006
Summary: What's one of the key ingredients in a relationship? And do Jim and Blair have it?
Review: I believe this is the story I've re-read most often in the The Sentinel fandom. In it, Linda describes a Jim Ellison who lets go of his rigid self-control and allows Blair close. Part of that is told in the form of flashbacks to the night before, while the rest of the story picks up on the morning after. Linda's decision to use solely Blair's POV to present the events unfolding was the perfect choice; one empathizes with Blair's panic upon awakening and feels the same awe as him when Jim's walls come down and give Blair the chance to read his innermost thoughts and feelings. Jim is deliciously vulnerable, Blair adorably confused, and the love slowly growing between them manages at all times to stay a few steps ahead of cloying romance. Addictive.

Genres: First Time, Humor Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Jim picks up after poker night, and Blair picks up on the fact that Jim has a thing for him.
Review: Livia says that this story is a tribute to the way Jim and Blair use humor around each other, and she is right. In "In Your Dreams", they tease, they joke with each other - and this brings them close enough that they can admit to being in love with each other without long deliberations or a major angsty production. The setup might not work post the Alex Barnes fiasco when superficial banter couldn't fill up the wounds left behind, but set as it is before "Sentinel Too", this story is a light, enjoyable read.

Genres: Character Study, PWP Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Blair contemplates the difference between the nights they're making love, and the nights the panther mates.
Review: The story is too short to have any kind of plot, but the two scenes described encapsulate everything to be said about the Sentinel-Guide dynamic in connection with sex. Believably extrapolated and scorchingly hot, Marag needs only a few lines to show us Jim and Blair the lovers as well as the mythical spirits following their genetic imperatives, and manages in the selfsame few lines to keep them perfectly in character.

Genres: First Time, Friendship, Humor Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Blair's latest date didn't go out as planned, and although it's embarrassing, Jim makes him explain the reason... which, in the end, leads to some unexpected revelations.
Review: Owlet starts her introduction to this story with the warning: "If you don't like tickling, run, run like the wind!", and right she is. In the wake of an aborted embarrassing date of Blair's, Jim and Blair descend into juvenility. Tickling, however, proves to be more sensual than anticipated, and Blair's body's reaction becomes a starting point for a discussion that otherwise wouldn't have been brought up - perhaps ever. Owlet's Jim and Blair are playful and yet very much in character, comfortable with each other, best friends. Light-hearted, hilarious and sweet.

Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes, violence
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg Time Frame: Post-Peru AU
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, AU, Drama, First Time, Hurt/Comfort, Romance Recommended: 09 Dec 2006
Summary: What if Jim remained in the Army and Blair made a much different career choice after a personal tragedy?
Review: In this AU novella, Romslinger presents the reader with a different world whose protagonists still feel achingly familiar. Jim, homeless, lives on the streets and takes care of two little girls, while Blair, a cop, is curious, caring and eager to help. When their paths cross, they feel drawn to each other - Jim senses his Guide, and Blair is attracted to mystery of the proud, yet vulnerable man. Romslinger is very adept at keeping the balance between the emotionally charged moments and the plot, and despite the high content of angst and romance never looses focus. Her Jim, though lost and hurting, is still so much the Sentinel we know, and Blair's care and protectiveness also read true of what we know of his character.

Genres: Angst, Drama, First Time, X-over with "One West Waikiki" Recommended: 09 Dec 2006
Summary: In the middle of a perplexing case, Jim encounters his double - and learns some things about himself and Blair.
Review: Russet McMillan's "The Body Thief" is not undisputed and evidently used to be a topic on [Prospect-L], but while it may contain a few clichés, they are completely overshadowed by the intensity of the plot, the strength of Jim's POV, the characters' emotions, and the author's style. It is a homage to Anne Rice's 'Tale of the Body Thief' in her Lestat series and transfers the book's plot onto Jim. Russet leaves him stranded in another body, desperately searching for a way to get back into his own while trying to adapt to the fact that his current body is... female. "Sugar is Sweet" is less fantastic, but just as fascinating, and has Jim encounter his twin - a man whose presence threatens to take away something Jim never dared reach for. In both stories, Jim is open, vulnerable, and helplessly drawn to Blair. Beautiful.

Genres: Episode Related, First Time Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: A missing scene from "Cypher", in which Jim explains why he came home early, and Blair learns many things from the discussion.
Review: In this story, the author returns to the show's first season and presents us with a Jim and Blair who are just beginning to learn how to be roommates and friends. Due to the early point in canon, Justine's Jim is a bit more relaxed than the man we encounter in season 4, but, while bisexual, is still too repressed to let go during sex. Blair is the one who has to take heart, who is strong enough to bend since Jim cannot. Yet. Their interaction takes their core characteristics into account and produces a result that reads sweet and true, and holds so much promise for the future. The ideal story for newbies to the fandom. Enjoy.

Review: Sihaya Black approaches the relationship between Jim and Blair from roughly the same direction as Legion, and her sex scenes are just as steamy and the underlying affection and tenderness just as palpable. She does prefer, however, to show Blair on top and call attention to Jim's emotional - and often physical - vulnerability during sex play. During sex, Jim's walls crumble and Blair - and the reader - can look directly into his heart. The initial setting of "Lie Perdu" requires a bit of a suspension of disbelief since the situation seems a bit too much construed, but the author's prose and the clear affection for the characters shine through.

Title: Understanding Story Length: ~ 11 KB

Summary: Simon has a long, serious talk with his son, and Daryl learns a lesson about homophobia.
Review: This story is quite short, and the point it makes is an old one. Still, I like the way Texas Ranger lets Simon list - and thereby reveal as baseless - the prejudices against gays. There's a ton of background story tied to this that I'd love to read, and I cannot believe that Jim and Blair coming out to the Cascade Major Crimes unit would have no serious repercussions, but nonetheless this short story appeals to the idealist in me.
