||Jared Padalecki, an inexperienced and uncertain young man, is sent to Kibilisa, Africa, to work for his church. Less than a month later the country is torn apart by civil war. Alone in charge of a group of children, he despairs of surviving - until he meets a mysterious man named Jensen Ackles who seems to know the country and the language. Their journey together will bring them terror, pain, horror and the deepest grief; but also friendship, self-sacrifice, love and redemption.
||While there are many fantasy AUs out there that feature Jared and Jensen, somehow this story is, for me, the most 'out there' of them all. Incredibly well researched and almost tangible from the vivid pictures of the landscapes the author paints, "Ashes of the Moon" is the perfect adventure story. Yet, it never sacrifices characterization for plot and, near the end, manages to bring up several plot twists of epic proportions that I, at least, didn't see coming. It also manages to educate on the circumstances of genocide in Africa without being patronizing and brings to mind books on the accusal of social wrongs as were popular in the 1990s. Brilliant.
