sports night fan fiction

Sports Night was my first conscious encounter with the genius that is Aaron Sorkin, and for a long time I resented The West Wing for depriving us of a possible third season of its younger brother on another network after Sports Night's cancellation by ABC. I usually hate comedy and switch off as soon as I hear a laugh track, but Sports Night's mix of comedy and drama convinced me from the get-go, especially since I'd already watched the internet explode with slash after the pilot. Watching Dan's on-air apology for the first time cemented that feeling, plus the deep caring between Dan and Casey drew me in. Add to that the joy of the fast-paced banter and repartees flying between the characters, and I was hooked. The show taxed my understanding of US English and almost managed to dishearten me, but Cori Lannam's scripts and transcripts provided the necessary lifeline. Now the show is out on DVD and I can give my poor 3rd generation tapes a rest. Dan + Casey ? = Fun.

The main pairing on this page is
Dan Rydell / Casey McCall.

Anna-Maria Jennings (aka AMJ)
e-mail: 14candles@gmail.com Website: ...'cuz that'll happen... @ reocities.com
Title: A Better Writer For It [1], [2] offsite Story Length: ~ 115 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Dan Rydell & OFC, Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 2
Genres: Angst, Character Study, Pre-Relationship Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: Dan's in love. He can write. Casey can't.
Review: Whatever Anna-Maria Jennings writes in this fandom, it's all good, but "A Better Writer For It" is the best of her stories. Most of all I love that the roles are reversed because for once Casey's broken while Dan is okay. He he can write, he can interact with Dana and the others - he's even in a functional relationship until he has to come to terms with the fact that Casey's in love with him. I adore competent!Danny, what dialogue is there is snappy and believable, and while Dan has a big revelation, the author presents it in an understated way instead of wallowing in it. Lovely.

Cita Powers

Title: Masking Tape Story Length: ~ 37 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Casey McCall / OMC, Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Pre-Relationship, PWP Recommended: 01 May 2001
Summary: Dan discovers a secret in Casey's past and a truth about himself. Casey gets over it.
Title: The Hart and the Lion [1], [2], [3], [4], [5] (story index) Story Length: ~ 1.023 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: borderline non-con, graphic m/m sex and violence, rape
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: AU not specified
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, AU, Drama, Hurt/Comfort, Supernatural Recommended: 12 Aug 2002
Summary: Daniel el-Rydal's new purchase - a slave named named Casey - brings sorrow and more happiness than he can imagine.
Review: Cita is the queen of the AU novel, but "Masking Tape" proves that she is also very good at writing in the canon universe. While the dialogue in "The Hart and the Lion" is not as rapid-fire and Sorkinesque as on the show and the relationship between these AU-versions of Dan and Casey by necessity not that of equals until almost the end, there is still some undefinable something in her characterizations that makes "Daniel el-Rydal" Dan and "Casey Mackall" Casey. In "Masking Tape" the banter between Dan and Casey is pure gold, and the plot is the most cringe-worthy one I've ever encountered (embarrassment! blushing!). Not to be missed.

Summary: The morning after the night before is never easy... especially in this office.
Title: Taking Chances Story Length: ~ 100 KB
Series: Sequel to "Getting Lucky" Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Angst, Drama Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Casey can't cope with a relationship, and Dan can't cope with Casey.
Title: You Get What You Need Story Length: ~ 123 KB
Series: Prequel to "Satisfaction" Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes, violence
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, Drama, Pre-Relationship Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Separation and crisis teach Dan and Casey that what they want isn't always what they need.
Title: Satisfaction Story Length: ~ 37 KB
Series: Sequel to "You Get What You Need" Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: First Time, PWP Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Dan and Casey seek satisfaction in each other after a long ordeal.
Review: Cori Lannam is a very good writer and used to be very caught up in Sports Night. Her dialogue is very similar to the one on the show and her characterizations are utterly believable. While her stories all contain angst, they are thankfully free of the emotional upheaval and hysteria of the second season. They focus on Casey coming to terms with the fact that he and Dan feel more for each other than simple friendship. Enjoy.

Title: Fifth Wheel (.zip file @ [EmLand]) offsite Story Length: ~ 39 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes, violence
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Angst, Drama Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: Casey has some issues Dan never dreamed of.
Title: Making It Real (.zip file @ [EmLand]) offsite Story Length: ~ 26 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Angst, First Time, PWP Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: You only fool people who want to be fooled.
Review: Emily Brunson is an extraordinary writer in a multitude of fandoms, and she got into Sports Night practically with its first episode. All her stories were written and are set in the first season and as such lack the personal details revealed about Dan and Casey later in the series. Her Dan is less emotionally fucked-up than her Casey and holds it together when Casey goes to pieces. Em is especially famous for her "Dancing on Glass" WiP that can also be found on her page, but I like these two stories best as they are the perfect example for early Sports Night slash.

Kit Higgins

Title: Mad [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] Story Length: ~ 102 KB
Series: The Mad Series Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 2
Genres: Angst, Drama, Episode Related, First Time, Fixit, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: When Dan hears of Dana's "dating plan", he flips. Casey doesn't want to listen until he has his eyes opened.
Review: Kit Higgins was as unhappy with the Dana & Casey courtship in the show's second season as I, and decided to write to combat her frustrations. The result is an not very nice portrayal of Dana, but a forceful!Dan that I find extremely convincing. The series is a bit too sweet towards the end, it lacks Sorkin's dialogue and has some POV switches between paragraphs, but I like how Kit delves into Dan's protective side and shows him taking on even Dana to prevent yet another woman from manipulating Casey's feelings. Dan gets mad, Casey gets cold and angry, and in the end, they get happy. The perfect solution. Now if only the "Mad Series" could be found online again...

Title: Being An Anchor offsite Story Length: ~ 252 KB
Series: Prequel to "Location, Location, Location" Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: rape, references to past rape, violence
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Angst, Drama, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: Casey hasn't been to work in three days. When Dan goes to see why, he finds Casey in the aftermath of a traumatic event.
Title: Location, Location, Location offsite Story Length: ~ 35 KB
Series: Sequel to "Being An Anchor" Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: references to past rape
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Established Relationship, PWP, Romance Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: Who hasn't dreamt of having sex atop "Sports Night"'s anchor desk?
Review: Lanning Cook's "Being An Anchor" blew me away when she posted it, and that feeling hasn't changed. I usually hate post-rape fics that lovingly detail the recovery process of the victim, but this story is the first that has proven me wrong. Perhaps it's because both it and its sequel are so deeply emotional and touching that you feel like you're involved in the progress yourself; perhaps it's because it's not from Casey's, the victim's, POV, but rather from Dan's, who's the one to help him through it. The banter - what there is - is true to the show, the relationships between Dan, Casey and the others on "Sports Night" are exactly what we've been shown, and it's so very beautiful to be witness to an exceptional friendship.

Title: Last Minute Trade offsite Story Length: ~ 43 KB
Series: Prequel to "Next Day Delivery" Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Episode Related, PWP Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: After his disastrous date in "Small Town", Casey returns to the office. Dan is there.
Title: Next Day Delivery offsite Story Length: ~ 55 KB
Series: Sequel to "Last Minute Trade" Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: First Time, PWP Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: Evasive maneuvers, next-day jitters, and sex. A lot of sex.
Review: Shrift and Nestra's double feature is pure sex. Dan and Casey get a little bit drunk, look at each other, lust and get horizontal. That might not sound like a lot of plot (and it isn't), but the stories' sheer hotness makes them a joy to read. What we get of dialogue and interaction is spot-on, and there is no angst and no outer world trying to intrude. This is the virtual equivalent of popcorn, and boy - does it taste good.

Title: The First Move offsite Story Length: ~ 58 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Dan Rydell & OFC, Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 2
Genres: Angst, Pre-Relationship Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Dan dates, and Casey studies up on Rodgers and Hart song lyrics. Then he studies up on Dan.
Review: "The First Move" starts out from Casey's POV, although later scenes from Dan's POV are introduced. Despite the fact that near the end, the POVs get tangled up a little, Sinead's style and familiarity with the characters make this a joy to read, last but not least because of the story transmitting such a sense of a calm, inevitable, natural progression that it's no wonder Dan and Casey end up together. Relaxing and sweet.

Title: Ice Story Length: ~ 107 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Dan Rydell / Mark Smithbauer (due South) Time Frame: Season 2
Genres: Character Study, Drama, X-over with "due South" (Season 4) Recommended: 06 Aug 2010
Summary: When things are difficult at the station, Dan finds an unexpected friend elsewhere.
Review: Ex-hockeyplayer Mark Smithbauer is like the little black dress of due South crossovers, and fits seamlessly into the Sports Night universe in this story. Mark becomes a lonely Dan's anchor, keeping him afloat despite the situation at the network and despite the rift between Dan and Casey, and Dan does the same for Mark who feels adrift banned from the ice and so far away from home. The story is calm and understated, the author's grasp of the characters and their fears and motivations subtle and yet spot-on, the usual banter believable instead of overwhelming. Most of all, I love Dan being mature and the cameo by a visiting Ben Fraser who, seen through Dan's perceptive eyes, is not the caricature painted in the later seasons of due South. The only downside is that the story's no longer available online.
