stargate: sg-1 fan fiction

Stargate: SG-1 used to be a series I gave up on after only a handful of season 1 episodes, disappointed that it wasn't equal to the movie. Years later I kept looking for a new fandom with plenty of fanfic and somehow stumbled into Stargate: SG-1 - and was sucked in immediately by the complexity and inherent conflict that was Jack/Daniel. I started watching the show again - with season 7 - and discovered that, while the show itself still had not improved considerably, a lot of very talented authors had done their best to deal with issues raised on it that had never been resolved in a satisfactory way. Fanfic gave the show's characters depth and showed us the emotional fallout from hurts, losses and falling-outs that the show glossed over in favor of more action scenes. I can't deny that one of the fandom's major thrills for me is the fact that it hits one of my kink buttons by way of making Jack O'Neill - military to boot - fall in love with a man. Still, I cannot abide stories in which Jack and Daniel get together before Sha'uri's death in season 3, for I cannot imagine Daniel devaluating their marriage by starting a meaningful relationship with someone else while still trying to find and save his wife.

The main pairing on this page is
Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson.

Title: Little Things offsite Story Length: ~ 195 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: questionable consent
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 4
Genres: Angst, Character Study, Drama Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: SG-1 returns from a mission of which they can only recall snatches of sensory impressions. Daniel starts rationalizing it under Bacchanalian-like rites, but neither he nor Jack can deny their experience forever.
Review: Usually, fan fiction does not aspire to lyrical heights, but if you're very lucky, you find exeptions. Anais' "Little Things" is one of these. Its plot is nothing new, the characterizations are good but not outstanding, there is a lot of (well-handled) angst - but it's the language utilized that transforms this into something special. Anais' Jack and Daniel are men with flaws that fight their feelings despite knowing the futility until they finally surrender to something far greater than themselves, and her descriptions give it all depth and meaning far beyond the ordinary. Beautiful.

Title: The Other Half offsite Story Length: ~ 232 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: questionable consent
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Post-Season 3
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, BDSM/Kink, Character Study Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: On a mission to a peaceful planet, Jack is given a necklace that compels him to seek Daniel's presence as well as anticipate and follow his orders. Daniel's initial refusal to take advantage of Jack in any way becomes a source of endless frustration for Jack.
Review: Anna's story is also one of my long-time favorites. Understated and incredibly well-written, it wouldn't work half as well if she hadn't chosen to write it solely from Jack's POV. She has his idiosyncracies down pat. His unquestioning acceptance of the necklace's influence is therefore very immediate and believable as well as - for us, the readers - disquieting in the way Jack feels no conflict or reluctance. He doesn't even see the problem and is instead crushed when Daniel refuses to accept even the smallest of Jack's offers who desires nothing more than being Daniel's willing slave... in all things.

Title: Acts of Consequence offsite Story Length: ~ 91 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: references to past rape
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 4
Genres: Character Study, Episode Related, First Time Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Jack has a consequence-free opportunity to ask some questions.
Review: "Acts of Consequence" is and will always remain one of my favorites. Apocrypha's writing is slow and sweet as molasses, and she captures you utterly in the perfect world she creates. The story is what episode 4x06 - "Window of Opportunity" should have been - Jack finally having the time and chance to ask the difficult questions, to do some soul-searching, to come to terms with what he wants in life. What he wants is Daniel, and he has enough patience, love and strength of will to overcome bad memories of the past and wait until they can come together as equals.

Title: Deeply, With Reason Story Length: ~ 15 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex, questionable consent
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 4
Genres: BDSM/Kink, Episode Related, PWP Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: The beginning of the end.
Review: Set at the beginning of Daniel's dream in episode 4x17 - "Absolute Power", this story is... what? Hot? Wrong? Both are correct. This is Daniel, having absolute power over Jack during sex, and little care for his lover's comfort. Still, even that dreamscape-love is not cruel, but rather possessive in nature, and Daniel's main motivation is to make Jack enjoy the experience, need it, and after going further than they ever have before, he ends up comforting Jack. All of this makes this Daniel, this Jack, utterly real to me - perhaps more real than the canon versions of them in the episode. Unfortunately, the story cannot be found online at the moment.

Title: Thanks Be to the Ancestors offsite Story Length: ~ 127 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 4
Genres: Angst, Episode Related, Established Relationship Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Jack comes face to face with some important truths in his life.
Review: Although the author labels this as "smarm", I believe that Darcy successfully avoids the two most common mistakes in this area: the child she introduces, Jack's son, is basically likeable, and Jack and Daniel's interactions with the toddler have none of the dreaded saccharine sweetness so often encountered in kid!fic. Instead, small Jarack is used as a means to bring Jack and Daniel closer together and to let Daniel identify with the part of Jack's life he only learned about in retrospect - fatherhood and parental responsibility. Furthermore, Darcy is courageous enough to let the child remain on Euronda instead of dragging him to Earth, and thus concludes the story on a bittersweet rather than sugary note.

Title: Just Like Old Times offsite Story Length: ~ 151 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: questionable consent
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 7 AU
Genres: AU, Action/Adventure, Angst, First Time Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: A past mission gone bad tore the team apart. Now they've reunited for what may be their last stand against the Goa'uld.
Review: Eros and the other authors at the "Feisty Daniel Appreciation Society" thankfully write Daniel Jackson as a mature, strong, capable man - one who loves Jack O'Neill, but is neither helpless nor feminized. So it's not surprising that both Jack and Daniel are such guys in this story - headstrong, stubborn, unwilling to give ground in a confrontation, but equally unable to remain on the outs for long. Somewhere in the middle, this story makes an abrupt turnabout from angsty relationship-related conflict to adventure, but the shift is gracefully executed and doesn't hurt the story. Good, solid stuff that is a pleasure to read.

Category: Slash, Het Warnings: graphic m/m sex, questionable consent
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson, Teal'c & Sam Carter Time Frame: Season 7
Genres: Angst, Character Study, Drama, First Time Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Daniel and Jack find themselves the subjects of behavorial conditioning, but in contrast to Pavlov's experiments, the flashing lights in their cell do not promise food.
Review: Kalimyre is one of the newer writers in this fandom, and while I liked this story, it also left me feeling a bit conflicted. Jack and Daniel are imprisoned and conditioned to need increased intimacy - something they fight at first, but soon learn to accept they are helpless against. Kalimyre's Daniel is the curious explorer we know while her Jack is determined to resist and remain in control, and despite the hint of non-con, the story would be just about perfect if not for the number of mistakes of verb tenses.

Title: The Garden Series [1], [2], [3], [4], [5] offsite Story Length: ~ 1.935 KB
Series: The Garden Series Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex, references to past rape
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill & OFC Time Frame: Season 7
Genres: Angst, Drama, First Time, Romance Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: When Daniel is severely injured, Jack has to re-think their relationship. Coming to terms with his feelings for Daniel, however, means coming to terms with his own past.
Title: Rainbow Warrior offsite Story Length: ~ 605 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 7
Genres: Angst, Drama, First Time, Friendship, PWP Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: When the US military changes its attitude towards homosexuals at last, Jack is finally free to accept the truth he has always known about himself. Daniel's epiphany is slower in coming.
Review: Lady Grey is the undisputed queen of long, drawn-out angst, sometimes even to the detriment of plausibility and characterization. Still, the emotional impact of her stories is staggering, and the pain she lets her characters suffer is beautiful in its raw intensity. Jack and Daniel are put through the wringer and emerge clearer-headed, purged and finally able to give all of themselves to the one they love. As in any romance novel, their road to realization is paved with misunderstandings, hurts and denial, as well as a certain amount of sap. Still, I have re-read "The Garden Series" countless times and am quite enamoured with "Rainbow Warrior" despite the pro-American 'Jack catches Bin Laden' storyline that turns my stomach.

Title: Time offsite Story Length: ~ 107 KB

Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 3
Genres: Character Study, Episode Related, First Time, PWP Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Hot, sand, boredom. Jack gets an idea.
Review: "Time" is a glimpse into Jack's head during an archeological mission off-world - just him and Daniel -, and Mandalee has him acting (and thinking) so utterly like himself that the reader feels like being inside his head. Mandalee's Jack is determined to seduce Daniel and to 'even the playing field', so to speak, despite the fact that he is jittery with fear and nerves. I've always had a fasciation with Bottom!Jack stories, and this one hits my kink with all there is. Jack, vulnerable, open, loving it. Perfection.

Title: Sinner's Grove offsite Story Length: ~ 181 KB

Category: Slash Warnings: rape, violence
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Post-Season 3
Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Sometimes too much of the host survives.
Review: Martha is very good at writing creepy stories that make you think. In "Sinner's Grove", she employs the recently quite popular literary technique of restructuring the story by shifting around chunks of it against the linear timeline. The result is two alternating storylines, one starting with the team's arrival on the planet, the other with Jack and Daniel's rescue. The forward and backward jumps do not distract from the subject matter and instead strengthen the focus on Daniel - a desperate Daniel dancing on the razor's edge attempting to stay alive and save Jack's life (and sanity) at the same time. I don't usually like dark stories. This one, however, is so well-written and had such an impact on me that I had to make an exception.

Title: Willemakee offsite Story Length: ~ 106 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: character death
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 8
Genres: Angst, Death Story, Drama Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Jack had wanted him to know.
Review: I haven't read "Willemakee" more than twice, and it shattered me each time. Mary Jane's Daniel is sent on a voyage of discovery following a dying Jack's last word; a voyage that sends him to a small town in Northern Minnesota that's the embodiment of a dream Jack had pursued in silence after their first (and only) night together. "We would have been happy here," Mary Jane lets Daniel say in one of the last paragraphs of the story, and yes, they would have been. "Willemakee" is the epitome of bittersweet. Loss, and love, intermingled. A must-read.

Title: Human Touch offsite Story Length: ~ 116 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash, Het Warnings: questionable consent
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill / Teal'c, Jack O'Neill & Sam Carter Time Frame: Season 5
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, First Time, Friendship Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Jack has a run in with some aliens and the result is not pretty for anyone.
Review: Yes, "Human Touch" is another take of the classic 'Aliens make them do it' cliché. Still, Meridian's story is anomalous in the respect that Jack's encounter with each of his teammates gets equal screen time and that none of the characters outside the main pairing have to suffer character bashing. The plot is not new, the characterizations are good, the writing is solid, the angst quotient is low - all in all, a small gem of a story and one of my all-time favorites.

Title: Lean On Me offsite Story Length: ~ 176 KB

Category: Slash Warnings: violence
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 6 AU
Genres: Action/Adventure, AU, Character Study, Drama, First Time, Fixit, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Jack has been captured by a Goa'uld who is torturing him for information. Can Jack hold out and will Daniel be able to resist rescuing him?
Review: This is how episode 6x06 - "Abyss" should have happened. In Selenay's alternate version of the episode, Daniel descends in order to stop Ba'al from torturing Jack any further, and so he returns to the SGC far sooner than on the show. Selenay is an exceptional writer with a good grasp of both Jack and Daniel (which is evidenced in her AU novel "Serpent in the Shadows" in which, despite the fantasy setting, both men are undeniably themselves) and the correct balance between emotion and action in her writing. Enjoy, and also go check out her SG-1 recommendations.

Title: Reveille offsite Story Length: ~ 60 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: not specified
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, First Time Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Jack and Daniel wake up in bed together.
Review: In "Reveille", shalott combines two clichés: 'the hungover morning after' and 'Daniel and Jack can read each other's thoughts'. The main part of the story, however, is about their attempts at coming to term with the enforced intimacy and loss of privacy that the telepathic link entails. shalott's deft hand makes certain that they are both perfectly in-character plus there are various hints at underlying humor that make this story a joy to read. Add to that a bit of well-researched archeology and a surprising last couple of lines, and you'll finish this story with a smile on your face.

Title: Minnesota Sunset [1], [2], [3], [4] offsite Story Length: ~ 146 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 7 to Season 8
Genres: Angst, Drama, First Time Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Daniel's having trouble finding his equilibrium after Janet's death, and Jack decides to try and help. They take a trip together, and Daniel finds himself shocked at what happens when they reach their destination.
Review: Sadly, Taz is no longer featured at Pepe's Place, but thankfully "Minnesota Sunset" is still available on the internet. Written wholly from Daniel's POV, Taz covers Season 7 and 8 from Janet's death to Anubis infiltrating the SGC after his defeat, and explains the distance between Jack and Daniel as Jack being unable to come to terms with his love for his friend. Jack is in denial, Daniel is in pain, and a lot of angst abounds until they finally realize that, no matter how dangerous being together might be, it is still preferable to the pain of enforced distance. Taz's style is good, if a bit emotional, the story's believable and well integrated into canon - I wish she'd written more.

Title: A Thousand Words for Oops offsite Story Length: ~ 113 KB

Category: Slash Warnings: questionable consent
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Mid-Series not specified
Genres: Action/Adventure, BDSM/Kink, Challenge Response, Established Relationship Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Daniel makes a small mistranslation and Jack finds out a few things about himself, their relationship, and pixie sticks.
Review: This story falls under the category of 'slave fic', but it is pretty light-hearted and only uses an off-world slave-keeping society as a means to explore the relationship between Jack and Daniel. Daniel, knowing that Jack O'Neill isn't one to pretend to be his body slave for long, uses his ingenuity and a light form of sexual power play to intrigue Jack and keep him on his toes. Thankfully angst-free, Teand's Jack vacillates between fascination and horror at the role he has to assume (and its implications), but his already existing relationship with Daniel allows him to follow Daniel's lead and accept it all as a game. Topped off by several humorous interactions with original characters, one is sad to see the story end.

Title: 48 Hours After offsite Story Length: ~ 121 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 6
Genres: Angst, Character Study, First Time, Romance Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Jack's revelation puts strain onto their friendship. Daniel needs time to find some answers.
Review: Set post episode 5x14 - "48 Hours", this story makes a gradual transition from angsty to sweet. For once, Jack is the one admitting to his attraction while Daniel is the one being unsure and hesitating, but the author's sure grasp of the characters makes it both utterly plausible. Written from Daniel's POV, the reader feels his irritation, hurt and gradual realization, while Daniel's insight into Jack O'Neill's psyche makes sure that the opposite viewpoint doesn't get neglected. Jack is childish, hurtful, hurt and unsure, and both their emotions leap off the page and make you feel with them. Delightful.

Genres: BDSM/Kink, Established Relationship, PWP Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Daniel gives Jack flying lessons.
Review: The Grrrl is one of those authors I have - and always will - read any story of. Her fan fiction is not about plot, action or adventure, but instead about the intricacies of interpersonal relationships, with quite a bit of excellent sex thrown in. "Gifts for your Gift" and its sequel are no exceptions. In both, Jack tries to come to terms with revelations about himself he never thought of before. In the first story, Jack has to come to terms with his feelings for Daniel bleeding over into work, and in the second, he faces the fact that he likes Daniel sometimes assuming the dominating role in the bedroom. His fears and confusion are captured very well, the sex is emotional, not mechanical, and their love for each other is tangible.

Title: Bridge Between Worlds offsite Story Length: ~ 265 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Pre-Slash Warnings: violence
Pairing: Jack O'Neill / Daniel Jackson Time Frame: Season 3
Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, Pre-Relationship Recommended: 11 Jul 2006
Summary: Jack struggles to make amends with Daniel after episode 3x18 - "Shades of Gray" while the team is on a first-contact mission to a highly advanced culture who could become extremely valuable allies.
Review: Upon reading "Bridge Between Worlds", one is not surprised to discover that the author has already published a sci-fi novel. Very reminiscent of various sci-fi roleplaying games, Tilt here introduces a fully-fleshed out alien society at a technological level free of Goa'uld influences that Earth can only be deeply envious of. Add to that a high number of original characters who are competent, but not Mary-Sue-ish in the slightest, and this story would win on ingenuity alone, even if the author weren't so good at depicting a hesitant Jack and Daniel finally finding each other.
