The Professional is one of the oldest fandoms around, and as such I discovered it long before I got to watch a single episode of the show. Its fans were far less flighty than today when everyone changes fandoms at the drop of a hat, and put far more love and effort into their work than what we're used to these days. The resulting stories were involved and very sustaining for the readers, plus tended to cover a variety of AUs. Handsome, aloof Bodie invited introspective pieces in which the authors pierced his emotional armor and made him realize that he felt far more than simple friendship for his partner, and more emotional Doyle was often written as suffering through periods of unrequited love until his partner finally managed to catch a clue. The obvious friendship between the two of them and the difference between their personalities were more than enough to cover a multitude of sins, e.g. far-fetched plots, racial prejudices and the fact that Lewis Collins who portrayed Bodie had only a very limited amount of facial expressions. Thankfully, the whole series has been released on DVD and is finally available beyond the UK for anyone eager to watch Bodie decked out in polonecks and Doyle in the skintight jeans of his.

The main pairing on this page is
Raymond Doyle / William Bodie.

Title: The Art of Love Story Length: ~ 116 KB

Summary: Trying to solve several murders, Bodie is sent undercover as a model for a group of artists. On Cowley's orders, he has to get close to one of the suspects... a certain Raymond Doyle.
Review: Alexandra is not only a very prolific writer, she is also very skilled at skirting the fine line between angst and agony. She likes to dissect the relationship between Bodie and Doyle and let them suffer, although not without reward - thankfully, they always end up together. There is no story of hers I cannot recommend, and I strongly suggest you read them all. Check out the Circuit Archive, and - enjoy.

Title: Festival of Lights Story Length: ~ 25 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Raymond Doyle / William Bodie Time Frame: Mid-Series not specified
Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: A helpless Cowley watches his best team trying to defuse a bomb, and as the countdown inevitably counts down to zero, Bodie and Doyle can't hide their feelings any longer.
Review: Short, sweet, kind of understated. Cowley is portrayed a bit more understanding than I see his character, but as a Christmas fic, this is perfect.

Title: Neon Nights Story Length: ~ 86 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Raymond Doyle / William Bodie Time Frame: Post-Series
Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama Recommended: 19 Nov 2000
Summary: Bodie can't accept Doyle being set up as a scapegoat in one of Cowley's schemes and takes it upon himself to help him escape - no matter the cost.
Review: Elessar writes AU-stories that leave you gasping for breath and longing for more. She knows both Bodie and Doyle; her characterizations are dead-on accurate, and she still manages to bring across the love they share, no matter what happens, and often has them facing a formidable opponent in the person of a triple-thinking Cowley. I can whole-heartedly recommend anything she's ever written.

Ellis Ward
e-mail: amaruq@comcast.net Archived at: The Circuit Archive, The Hatstand
Title: The Return offsite Story Length: ~ 219 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Raymond Doyle / William Bodie Time Frame: Mid-Series not specified
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, Drama, First Time, Friendship Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Ray Doyle quit CI5 after his partner was kidnapped and believed dead. Until one day Cowley appears on his doorstep, bringing wonderful news and an utterly exhausted visitor. But what has happened to Bodie?
Review: This is certainly the Pros slash story I've re-read the most often. Its sweetness leaves me speechless every time. Doyle's agony over loosing Bodie, the miracle of his return, and the events that transpire afterwards - they're all depicted so tangibly that it feels like the reader experiences Bodie and Doyle's emotions with them. Ellis' Bodie has been turned inside out, is vulnerable and heartbreaking beautiful in his trust, and Doyle has also been shattered wide open by the perceived loss of his partner. Unparalleled.

Jack Reuben Darcy
e-mail: jack_3745@yahoo.com.au Archived at: The Circuit Archive
Title: Saints and Miracles [1], [2], [3] Story Length: ~ 518 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Raymond Doyle / William Bodie, William Bodie / OMC Time Frame: Post-Season 5
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, Drama Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: The path to love for Bodie and Doyle is long and fraught with misunderstandings.
Title: The Tangled Web [1], [2] Story Length: ~ 452 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Raymond Doyle / William Bodie Time Frame: Post-Series
Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, X-over with "The Chief" Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: 14 years after leaving CI5, Bodie returns as Controller, still mourning the death of his love, Doyle. Travelling north to meet the country's police Chiefs, he meets Alan Cade and begins a journey with more surprises than he bargained for.
Review: No one does drama and angst like Jack Reuben Darcy. The author is incredibly gifted at setting up situations rife with misunderstandings, heartbreak and despair, and manages to keep the readers glued to their computer screens until the conflicts are resolved. That might be considered a bit excessive at times, but the stories' style and emotional depth are more than sufficient compensation. If you have several hours to spare, then enjoy these. Certainly a must-read.

Kathy Keegan (aka Mel Keegan, aka Jane, aka Madelaine Ingram)
e-mail: none Website: Mel Keegan Online
livejournal: ljmelkeegan
Title: Coming Home offsite Story Length: ~ 324 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: borderline non-con, graphic m/m sex, references to past rape
Pairing: Raymond Doyle / William Bodie, Raymond Doyle / Murphy, William Bodie / OMC, Raymond Doyle / William Bodie / Murphy Time Frame: Mid-Series not specified
Genres: Angst, Character Study, Drama, Hurt/Comfort, Threesome Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Ray Doyle breaks up with Bodie to protect his heart and his self-respect. At first, it is only Bodie's pride that is hurt.
Review: Also one of the best Pros slash stories ever written. Kathy's Bodie is a careless, egotistical bastard in the beginning. And it takes a lot of suffering on his part until he finally realizes that love is too precious to trample on. I don't usually recommend stories in which there is non-OTP sex, but said sex is a necessary plot device in making Bodie realize how wrong he has been. In short, this story is deliciously angsty and a deep, wonderful glimpse into Bodie's repressed psyche.

Lezlie Conch (aka Lezlie Shell)
e-mail: none Archived at: The Circuit Archive
Title: Fly on the Wall offsite Story Length: ~ 82 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Raymond Doyle / William Bodie Time Frame: Mid-Series not specified
Genres: Friendship, Humor Recommended: 17 Oct 2007
Summary: Doyle goes undercover as a hooker, and the CI5 agents on surveillance have to pick him up one after the other - much to the hilarity of their co-workers.
Review: Lezlie is here a marvel at dialogue. Witty, in character, yet original, it is the banter between Bodie, Murphy and their colleagues that paints all the stages of the inexorable train-wreck that is Murphy's bet carrying Doyle's "seduction" to the extremes. Bodie is swept along with the tide and is just as overwhelmed as his partner when they finally come face-to-face. Add to that an electronic bug that has quickly become inconvenient, and the resulting slapstick will bring tears to your eyes. I've rarely laughed as much upon reading a story as I did during "Fly on the Wall". Don't miss this.

Title: Sleeping Prince offsite Story Length: ~ 15 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Raymond Doyle / William Bodie Time Frame: Mid-Series not specified
Genres: Angst, Drama, Established Relationship Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: Just like in the fairy tale - a catatonic Doyle is awakened by Bodie's kiss.
Review: Short and sweet - a glimpse into a family life of Doyle's that I wouldn't mind seeing more of.

PJ
e-mail: none Archived at: The Circuit Archive
Title: Dust and Secrets offsite Story Length: ~ 96 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: references to past rape, violence
Pairing: Raymond Doyle / William Bodie Time Frame: Post-Season 5
Genres: Action/Adventure, Supernatural Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: During the unofficial visit of an Arabian King, Bodie and Doyle have to organize security with a SAS contingent in Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire. Soon, they can't shake off the feeling that the stories about the castle's ghost might be true - and the ghost seems to be especially fond of Ray Doyle.
Review: I must admit that at first, the author's decision to mix The Professionals with a supernatural storyline threw me for a loop - ghosts and CI5? For real? Surprisingly enough it works, and the ending of the story is simply perfect. Don't miss this.

Rob
Obit: Rob @ Fanlore Archived at: The Circuit Archive
Title: On Paper offsite Story Length: ~ 23 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Raymond Doyle / William Bodie Time Frame: Pre-Series
Genres: AU, PWP Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Two strangers meet in a gay club and spend the night together. Years later, they meet again after having both been recruited by CI5.
Review: What if Bodie and Doyle had met before joining CI5? Rob uses an anonymous encounter to show how Bodie and Doyle became partners despite their wildly different personalities and thus explains why they didn't kill each other during their first week in CI5. Not very likely, true, but this story has an undefinable something that struck a chord with me. Judge for yourselves.
