inception fan fiction

Inception is a movie I originally had no plans to ever see, for Leonardo DiCaprio is a red rag to me - any movie he stars in, I avoid. In this case, however, I'm extremely glad I allowed my circle of friends to drag me with them to the cinema, because Inception simply blew me away. The whole novel idea of a group of thieves extracting information from the subconscious mind of their victims while they dream was refreshingly new and futuristic to be enjoyable, plus well suited for large-scale action sequences that enhanced, but didn't steal the plot. The fact that DiCaprio's character was but one member of a team and was treated as such by the movie instead of monopolizing everything helped a lot, but it was the character of Eames, the team's Forger (Tom Hardy), and his constant bickering - one might say flirting - with their Point Main, Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), that sold me on the movie and subsequently the fandom. A flirtatious, gun-obsessed Forger with a fluid gender identity (who, after all, apparently enjoys taking on female form in dreamscape!) constantly trying to get under the skin of an eminently capable, self-possessed control freak with a penchant for three-piece-suits makes for a subtext that's eye-catching enough to spawn tons of slash. Apparently the world agreed - half a week after the movie premiere, the fandom exploded.

The main pairing on this page is
Eames / Arthur.

Title: Impossible Until It's Done (art by johanirae) offsite Story Length: ~ 46 KB
Series: none Rating: PG
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Eames / Arthur Time Frame: Post-Movie
Genres: Character Study, Friendship Recommended: 02 Oct 2010
Summary: "You are either a genius of unheard of proportions, or a complete moron. Is it even possible to incept yourself?" Eames can't sleep. It's somehow Arthur's fault. Arthur is not impressed.
Review: I've always had a fondness for stories dealing with insomnia, and Eames suffering from the same after implanting in his own mind the idea that he needs to hear Arthur ordering him to go to sleep before he can drop off into unconsciousness is just the right kind of fucked up and sweet to make me smile. Eames, although sleep-deprived, is self-aware enough to grasp the problem quickly, and Arthur's fond exasperation - and willingness to help - is palpable in every verbal exchange they have. Eames needs help, and Arthur provides it, and that it all leads to kissing is inevitable, really.

Title: Life In Virtual Reality [1], [2] offsite Story Length: ~ 55 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: violence
Pairing: Eames / Arthur Time Frame: Post-Movie
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, Character Study Recommended: 02 Oct 2010
Summary: ‘Reality’s creeping into your dreams, Eames. Your security’s going to be ruined if you can’t get rid of me.' Eames finds himself haunted by projections of Arthur.
Review: The author is a reliable garant for well-written Eames/Arthur slash, and this story is no exception. Here, Eames' astonishment at encountering a projection of Arthur during his jobs post-inception is just so delicious to read about, especially because Projection!Arthur is so very much like the real thing it's no surprise that Eames falls in love. The understated vein of humor running through the story enhances the feel-good quality of the fic, the angsty misunderstandings are believable instead of over the top, and the happy ending doesn't exactly come as a surprise.

Title: Never so Safe as I am with You offsite Story Length: ~ 39 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: violence
Pairing: Eames / Arthur Time Frame: Post-Movie
Genres: Action/Adventure, Humor Recommended: 02 Oct 2010
Summary: Arthur has better subconscious security than anyone in the world. It's notoriously impossible to steal a secret from him. Unless, of course, you're Eames.
Review: This story is all about the limitless potential of the dreamscape, and it feels just as infinite. The team enters Arthur's subconscious for training purposes - although it feels more like just for fun -, and Eames who's partnered up with Ariadne for the exercise soon discovers that he seems to have carte blanche to do whatever he likes... unlike Cobb whose adventures (Black panther? Waterboarding? Seriously?) are just for laughing-out-loud. Arthur's true feelings are exposed, Cobb acts as an unwilling instigator breaking up the stalemate, and Eames reciprocates with the most amazing implied declaration of love ever seen in dreams. Utterly charming.

Title: Dulcia Somnia (author page @ ff.net) offsite Story Length: ~ 36 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Eames / Arthur Time Frame: Post-Movie
Genres: Angst, Character Study Recommended: 02 Oct 2010
Summary: When Arthur sleeps, he always dreams of the same thing.
Review: This is a very well-written take on an early cliché in this fandom - one of them being mistaken for a projection in the other's dream that allows them to glean the true feelings the other has for them. In this case, for a change, it is Arthur who pines after an oblivious Eames, and who consequently is entirely without defenses in his dream when the real Eames happens upon him. A bit of angst delays the resolution, but not unbearably so. Solid, representative, entirely enjoyable.

Title: Breaking Point offsite Story Length: ~ 37 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes
Pairing: Eames / Arthur Time Frame: Pre- to Post-Movie
Genres: Angst, Character Study, Drama Recommended: 06 Aug 2010
Summary: One day, Eames takes his flirtation a little too far, and Arthur's strategy of ignorance crumbles.
Review: This story is the first one that entirely sold me on this pairing, for it has more depth than it was usual at that point in this fandom. I most admire the light hand of the author, both in implying enough about Arthur's past experiences before he met Cobb that Eames can guess at the truth, as well as in keeping their physical interactions in front of the team understated enough to be utterly believable and in-character, in yet in combination with Arthur's natural reserve make them mean so much. Here, it's Eames who pines and flirts and flirts with increasing desperation, managing to wear away Arthur's veneer in the end, and yet only proves he's a man in love, not a creep, whereas Arthur gets to be deliciously guarded and vulnerable.

hackthis

Title: Kobayashi Maru offsite Story Length: ~ 51 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Eames / Arthur Time Frame: Mid- to Post-Movie (Flashbacks to Pre-Movie)
Genres: Angst, Character Study, Drama Recommended: 02 Oct 2010
Summary: Arthur learns that being a lover is not about being selfish. Being a lover is not about him. It is about Eames and him.
Review: Another very good author has joined the Inception fandom, and this story, as expected, doesn't disappoint. Told in a linear fashion interspersed with flashbacks to the first time Eames and Arthur had a go at an intimate relationship, hackthis tells the story of Arthur realizing and attempting to rectify his mistake in letting him go. She also introduces another semi-canonically supported fandom favorite - Eames coming from old money -, and has a literary orgasm over bespoke suits and male fashion designers (her meta research post on this can be found in the links section).

Title: Two Steps Towards Make Believe offsite Story Length: ~ 22 KB
Series: none Rating: PG
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Eames / Arthur Time Frame: Post-Movie
Genres: Character Study, Friendship Recommended: 02 Oct 2010
Summary: Sleep has never come easily to Arthur. That's why he's so surprised that it comes easily when he's got his head on Eames's shoulder.
Review: This is, without question, the one story I've read and re-read most often. It also deals with insomnia, more precisely with Arthur suffering from the same, and is just endlessly cute following a sleepless Arthur who's attached himself to Eames' side for the sake of proper, restorative, happiness-inducing sleep. Arthur experiments, Eames tries to be a gentleman, and much bed-sharing is had by all. Using insomnia as an explanation for Arthur's aloofness is a novelty, and yet so very believable. Sweet.

Mirabella (aka Lobelia Sackville-Baggins)

Title: Towards Zero offsite Story Length: ~ 89 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: violence
Pairing: Eames / Arthur Time Frame: Pre- to Post-Movie
Genres: Character Study Recommended: 02 Oct 2010
Summary: Five levels down, and five to dig yourself back out. Arthur met Eames' projection long before he met Eames.
Review: This story features another wholly new concept, and does it very well - Arthur is intrigued by a foreign projection that he soon starts creating in his own dreams, and once he meets the real Eames, it's a struggle to not confuse them. Arthur is all soft and yearning behind his proper façade, Eames is scarily competent (even his semi-canonical military background is hinted at), and when Arthur slips up, it's - against Arthur's fears - not the end of the world. Check out the author's other Inception stories - they're just as good (and also venture onto new ground).
