I came late to the Harry Potter fandom, but I was captivated by book #1, and downright in love when book #3 came along. The glimpses we were given of the adult world, the hints at the tragedy in the background, Remus Lupin and Sirius Black, Harry's parents and Severus Snape... they all intrigued me and soon eclipsed my interest in Harry and his friends. Which was the reason the first pairing I fell for was Sirius/Remus, soon followed by Harry/Snape. The first was practically canon, the latter was interesting because of the dynamics (age, enmity, Voldemort) and the fact that it quickly became so popular. But my greatest love snuck up on me, and Fabula Rasa is to blame: Snape/Black. I love Sirius, and I cannot abide stories in which he's constantly put down and ridiculed while Snape is given the power to hurt him. To me they are equals, and book #5's canon (as well as the Veil) are things I try to ignore. I want Sirius to be exonerated, recompensed for the lost years of his life, and healthy and happy again with the people he cares about. The greatest cruelty ever committed by oh-so-saintly Dumbledore has always been, in my opinion, the high-handed choice to lock him up in 12 Grimmauld Place with nothing but shadows and alcohol for comfort.

Review: Arachnethe2 isn't a native speaker, and that is sometimes felt in her story. Still, the picture she paints of Hogwarts where Sirius is hiding in Snape's rooms and showing up in the Great Hall in the guise of Snuffles is the same one I painted in my head after book #4. In his animagus form, Sirius spies on the Death Eaters, Snape follows Voldemort's summons, and Harry and his friends are delighted to have Snuffles around. Until Macnair and a group of Aurors turn up. Why couldn't have canon been like this?

Summary: Harry is cursed, and comes to Snape for the cure.
Review: In "Quid Pro Quo", the author puts Harry and Snape on equal footing by letting Harry return to Hogwarts as an adult, an Auror hit by a lethal curse. Their old animosity has already been overcome by the time they fought together during the war, but the weeks they are forced to spend in close proximity while Snape brews the potion to cure Harry allow both to take a good look at the other and finally see him as a man, almost a stranger, and not the bane of their existence from a few years back. Aucta Sinistra's characters are likable while still believable extrapolations of their canon selves, and their slow rapprochement is portrayed very realistically. Well worth reading.

Review: Normally I cannot abide humor mixed with romance, but this story has been one of my favorites right from the start. "Just a few Letters off" has all the trappings of a lighthearted piece of theatrical comedy, but is still tailored well enough to the Harry Potter universe to be a welcomed distraction from the usual drama and tragedy rife in this fandom. For once, the war against Voldemort doesn't cast its shadow over Hogwarts: Harry is a teenager finally growing up, Snape opens up to his anonymous pen-pal, and an owl named Eros lives up to its name. Enjoy.

Review: I cannot recall how exactly it happened that I found Fabula Rasa's stories, I just remember that I soon haunted Titti's "Thin Line" archive daily in hopes of another one being posted. Fabula is one of the few authors capable of finding the perfect balance between her protagonists and succeeding in making neither the sole victim nor perpertator. Her Sirius and Snape always give as good as they get and somehow still manage to overcome almost two decades of loathing and mutual hatred. I enormously regret that the new canon bits introduced in OotP pulled the rug out from underneath Fabula's speculations on Sirius' family and the dynamic of the Marauders' and Snape's interactions during their Hogwarts years and succeeded in discouraging her from writing anymore in this fandom.

Review: This story was a balm on my soul after OotP, and what I wish J. K. Rowling had devoted her next book to: Sirius returning from behind the Veil. Helene gives us an original plot and a believable explanation for the history behind the artefact and subtly centers her story on Remus. She treats all characters fairly, doesn't resort to fanon clichés and by hinting at, rather than exploiting the intimate relationship between Sirius and Remus, makes it all the more real. Unfortunately, despite the hints at further mysteries, there's no sequel - which really is a shame. A must-read.

Review: kai has dabbled in almost any big fandom you can name, and her contribution to Harry Potter slash is brilliant as always. In this post-GoF world, her Order faces a new challenge after Voldemort's fall - an imperium of unscrupulous dark wizards who've managed to render a great number of magical means useless. Forced to work together by Dumbledore, Snape and Harry develop a hybrid between charms and potions called the Unconscionables, and kai intersperses and juxtaposes the story of how this came to be by a fictional thesis on the same subject written by Hermione Granger. Fascinating, innovative and a joy to read.

Review: I've encountered this story twice at different points of my fannish obsession, and twice it managed to unbalance and depress me to an amount I still find astonishing. Despite the fact that it's a crossover with Buffy, the interactions between the original Marauders and their friends scream "canon" to me and detail a life - and fate - that feels as clear and painful as cut glass. Inexorable, the beginning tumbles along into oblivion, and the flashes we are offered of another, a happier time, make it all the more tragic. Painful. Utterly beautiful.

Review: I cannot recommend these novels enough. Robin's alternate universes are bittersweet and yet a balm to the soul to anyone quarreling with the events of OotP. In both stories, Sirius gets the chance to win his life back after Azkaban, and matures instead of sinking into despair. Harry also grows up far faster and learns what responsibility means. Style, imagination, characterizations, relationships and character developments are all spot-on and offer a look into a different world in which old elements come together to create something new. Especially 'The Unbroken Universe' is outstanding in its ambition, attention to detail and creativity, and finally affords Sirius the pivotal part I've always wished for him and the Marauders to hold in J. K. Rowling's world.

Summary: A collection of interludes in the Stealing Harry verse, most of which feature the River House in Betwys Beddau.
Review: Sam's "Stealing Harry" universe is brilliant in its consistency and imagination. Here, Sirius Black is not a broken man, and Remus Lupin has never known the deprivations of loneliness and poverty. When they find in each other the man they love, it is far from dramatics or angst, and feels more like a comfortable set of clothes one slips into. I've found that I rather miss Hermoine and Ron during Harry's new adventures, but the interactions between Ravenclaw Padma Patil, Hufflepuff Draco Malfoy, Gryffindor Neville Longbottom and Slytherin Harry Potter are a nice substitute and offer an intriguingly different view on the books' plots we already know. Well-written and hard to stop reading - I know I'll be checking Sam's lj for new chapters regularly.

Summary: Despite having feelings for 'The Boy Who Lived', Snape never expected anything to come out of it - until his spying is revealed and a clandestine affair with his student commences.
Review: I've always felt horribly torn about this series, for Harry is only 15 when he and Snape admit to feeling something for each other. It is wonderfully well-written, Snape's vulnerabilities - as witnessed through Harry's eyes - and Harry's teenaged insecurity and stubborn determination are almost tangible. Telanu's Snape is not entirely canon, but her grasp of his changes of mood from calm dignity to cold fury, screaming anger or a wondering sort of contentment makes him even more real than Rowling's books. Her Harry fights for what he wants, he grows up and sometimes shows a hint of ruthlessness that is disquieting. Unfortunately, the final two installments in the series are not at all what I expected, but all in all, the series - as disputed as it is - is a must-read in this fandom.

Review: Faren's Sirius Black is not the irreparably damaged man we met in Rowling's later books, and his and Harry's world is not the gloomy claustrophobia of Magical Britain. In this story, Sirius and Harry travel the world, heal and grow up in the process, and prepare for what is to come. Add to that perfect grammar, good characterizations (sometimes deservedly unflattering), OCs that feel like real people, and an utterly believable alternate way events unfold at Hogwarts in Harry's absence, and the only thing this story lacks is a lot more chapters... and a satisfying ending.
