harry potter fan fiction

I came late to the Harry Potter fandom, but I was captivated by book #1, and downright in love when book #3 came along. The glimpses we were given of the adult world, the hints at the tragedy in the background, Remus Lupin and Sirius Black, Harry's parents and Severus Snape... they all intrigued me and soon eclipsed my interest in Harry and his friends. Which was the reason the first pairing I fell for was Sirius/Remus, soon followed by Harry/Snape. The first was practically canon, the latter was interesting because of the dynamics (age, enmity, Voldemort) and the fact that it quickly became so popular. But one of my other favorite pairings snuck up on me, and Fabula Rasa is to blame: Snape/Black. I love Sirius, and I cannot abide stories in which he's constantly put down and ridiculed while Snape is given the power to hurt him. To me they are equals, and book #5's canon (as well as the Veil) are things I try to ignore. I want Sirius to be exonerated, recompensed for the lost years of his life, and healthy and happy again with the people he cares about. That later led me to Harry/Sirius slash despite all its inherent problems, simply because Harry is undeniably the one person who loves Sirius the most. The greatest cruelty ever committed by oh-so-saintly Dumbledore has always been, in my opinion, the high-handed choice to lock him up in 12 Grimmauld Place with nothing but shadows and alcohol for comfort.

The main pairings on this page are
Harry Potter / Sirius Black
Sirius Black / Severus Snape or
Harry Potter / Severus Snape.

Title: Twenty-One (author page @ ff.net) offsite Story Length: ~ 24 KB
Series: none Rating: PG
Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes
Pairing: none Time Frame: Pre-"The Philosopher's Stone"
Genres: Character Study, Drama Recommended: 30 Apr 2010
Summary: He was a killer, he knew that. He was a dangerous convict, or so they said. But when it came down to it, he was just twenty-one.
Review: This story is, in a nutshell, the tragedy of the decision to send Sirius Black to Azaban without a trial, and it just breaks my heart. He barely had the chance to experience life after Hogwarts before he lost his innocence in the First War, and then lost everything else with his best friend's death. I dare anyone to read this and not empathize with Sirius. The whole injustice of what happened to him is depicted nowhere else as to the point as here.

Pairing: Harry Potter / Sirius Black Time Frame: Post-"The Goblet of Fire"
Genres: Angst, Drama, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 30 Apr 2010
Summary: Desire can be a tricksome little bitch, can't she?
Review: Harry is fifteen in this story when he finds love in his godfather, but their developing relationship - juxtaposed with scenes from a board of inquiry at Hogwarts - never gives the impression of being wrong. To the contrary. The board and the threat of them being ripped from each other's side is what's wrong, especially because the author via Harry makes it very clear that it is Harry who has the power in their relationship. Sirius is heartbreakingly beautiful in his woundedness, Harry is supportive and mature, and the scenes between them have an ethereal feel due to the beauty of the language, of all descriptions. Amazing.

Title: My Beloved Slytherin offsite Story Length: ~ 87 KB

Pairing: Sirius Black / Severus Snape, Millicent Bulstrode & Neville Longbottom Time Frame: Post-"The Goblet of Fire"
Genres: Action/Adventure, AU, Established Relationship, Romance Recommended: 15 Aug 2006
Summary: 24 hours in the established relationship of Sirius and Severus, featuring the undying love between Millicent Bulstrode and Neville Longbottom.
Review: Arachnethe2 isn't a native speaker, and that is sometimes felt in her story. Still, the picture she paints of Hogwarts where Sirius is hiding in Snape's rooms and showing up in the Great Hall in the guise of Snuffles is the same one I painted in my head after book #4. In his animagus form, Sirius spies on the Death Eaters, Snape follows Voldemort's summons, and Harry and his friends are delighted to have Snuffles around. Until Macnair and a group of Aurors turn up. Why couldn't have canon been like this?

Pairing: Harry Potter / Sirius Black Time Frame: Post-"The Prisoner of Azkaban"
Genres: Character Study, Friendship Recommended: 30 Apr 2010
Summary: It was easy. He just lifted his head and pushed, pushed his mouth clumsily against Sirius', and felt.
Review: This story feels like it starts in reality and then just veers off, almost inperceptively, into a world of dreams, a world out of time. Harry meets Sirius in the Shrieking Shack, and while they only have a few hours, they manage to squeeze in some surrogate father-son moments that have to make up for what they missed over the years. They both don't draw lines, just feel that closeness, and share a kiss that promises so much and yet never, due to the later canon, has the chance of leading to more. And that is the inherent tragedy.

Title: Quid Pro Quo offsite Story Length: ~ 387 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Harry Potter / Severus Snape Time Frame: Future Post-"The Order of the Phoenix"
Genres: Angst, First Time, Romance Recommended: 15 Aug 2006
Summary: Harry is cursed, and comes to Snape for the cure.
Review: In "Quid Pro Quo", the author puts Harry and Snape on equal footing by letting Harry return to Hogwarts as an adult, an auror hit by a lethal curse. Their old animosity has already been overcome by the time they fought together during the war, but the weeks they are forced to spend in close proximity while Snape brews the potion to cure Harry allow both to take a good look at the other and finally see him as a man, almost a stranger, and not the bane of their existence from a few years back. Aucta Sinistra's characters are likable while still believable extrapolations of their canon selves, and their slow rapprochement is portrayed very realistically. Well worth reading.

Summary: Harry is presented with an unexpected chance to spend time with someone he loved... but now he also has a difficult choice to make.
Review: I love the feeling of wistfulness in this story, the right-on-target prose and the skillful transportation of the characters of Harry's friends to a point ten years in the future, showing them grown up and yet not fundamentally changed. Faced with the possibility of saving Sirius by traveling back in time, Harry, now a competent auror, has to weigh his chances. He cannot afford to change the past, but how can he forego this one opportunity to make up for the biggest regret in his life? BlackShuck's description of his adventure is thrilling and restful at the same time, for the inevitability of Harry's actions shines through in every paragraph.

Genres: Romance, Humor, Pre-Relationship Recommended: 15 Aug 2006
Summary: A romantic story about two lovers who find each other through the delightful whims of serendipity and a hard-of-hearing owl.
Review: Normally I cannot abide humor mixed with romance, but this story has been one of my favorites right from the start. "Just a few Letters off" has all the trappings of a lighthearted piece of theatrical comedy, but is still tailored well enough to the Harry Potter universe to be a welcomed distraction from the usual drama and tragedy rife in this fandom. For once, the war against Voldemort doesn't cast its shadow over Hogwarts: Harry is a teenager finally growing up, Snape opens up to his anonymous pen-pal, and an owl named Eros lives up to its name. Enjoy.

Summary: Snape carries a secret that threatens to be the undoing of the Order - and of Sirius Black.
Review: I cannot recall how exactly it happened that I found Fabula Rasa's stories, I just remember that I soon haunted Titti's "Thin Line" archive daily in hopes of another one being posted. Fabula is one of the few authors capable of finding the perfect balance between her protagonists and succeeding in making neither the sole victim nor perpertator. Her Sirius and Snape always give as good as they get and somehow still manage to overcome almost two decades of loathing and mutual hatred. I enormously regret that the new canon bits introduced in OotP pulled the rug out from underneath Fabula's speculations on Sirius' family and the dynamic of the Marauders' and Snape's interactions during their Hogwarts years and succeeded in discouraging her from writing anymore in this fandom.

Title: Why Two Feet Are Better Than Four offsite Story Length: ~ 75 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Harry Potter / Sirius Black Time Frame: Future Post-"The Order of the Phoenix"
Genres: Angst, Character Study, Fix-It Recommended: 30 Apr 2010
Summary: Sirius has returned from the veil as Padfoot and cannot seem to turn back. Six years later, Harry refuses to keep waiting and starts on a campaign convincing Sirius to return to human.
Review: Despite the topic, this story reads surprisingly light-hearted - perhaps because the outcome of Harry's campaign is never really in question. Harry faces the problem in a mature manner, foregoing self-pity or emotional blackmail, just showing options, and how could Sirius resist, no matter how deeply entrenched he's become in Padfoot's skin? Short, poignant, and oh so very believable.

Summary: Trapped in a world where he can be neither seen nor heard, Sirius Black struggles to communicate to his friends that he may not be as dead as they think he is... and that something dreadful lurks beyond the veil.
Review: This story was a balm on my soul after OotP, and what I wish J. K. Rowling had devoted her next book to: Sirius returning from behind the Veil. Helene gives us an original plot and a believable explanation for the history behind the artefact and subtly centers her story on Remus. She treats all characters fairly, doesn't resort to fanon clichés and by hinting at, rather than exploiting the intimate relationship between Sirius and Remus, makes it all the more real. Unfortunately, despite the hints at further mysteries, there's no sequel - which really is a shame. A must-read.

Genres: Action/Adventure, AU Recommended: 15 Aug 2006
Summary: The difference between History and What Really Happened.
Review: kai has dabbled in almost any big fandom you can name, and her contribution to Harry Potter slash is brilliant as always. In this post-GoF world, her Order faces a new challenge after Voldemort's fall - an imperium of unscrupulous dark wizards who've managed to render a great number of magical means useless. Forced to work together by Dumbledore, Snape and Harry develop a hybrid between charms and potions called the Unconscionables, and kai intersperses and juxtaposes the story of how this came to be by a fictional thesis on the same subject written by Hermione Granger. Fascinating, innovative and a joy to read.

Pairing: none Time Frame: Pre-"The Order of the Phoenix" AU
Genres: Drama, Friendship Recommended: 30 Apr 2010
Summary: After the Triwizard Tournament debacle, Sirius decides it's high time he started playing a more active role in his godson's life.
Review: The author calls this "a Sirius-takes-charge fic", and that is entirely apt. Unlike in canon, here, at the onset of OotP, Sirius - despite being relegated to hiding in 12 Grimmauld Place - steps up to his role as Harry's godfather and starts preparing Harry for his destiny according to the Prophecy. He does so in secret and in opposition to Dumbledore, and - by necessity - estranges Harry from his old friends. Sirius' meticulous plans highlight and point out all those instances in canon that never made much sense. The only bones of contention are the author's punctuation as well as the fact that the story doesn't get updated as often as it should be!

Now they're caught up in a civil war in a world they never knew existed. But can their Muggle magic really win the war? And for which side?
Review: I've encountered this story twice at different points of my fannish obsession, and twice it managed to unbalance and depress me to an amount I still find astonishing. Despite the fact that it's a crossover with Buffy, the interactions between the original Marauders and their friends scream "canon" to me and detail a life - and fate - that feels as clear and painful as cut glass. Inexorable, the beginning tumbles along into oblivion, and the flashes we are offered of another, a happier time, make it all the more tragic. Painful. Utterly beautiful.

Summary: After growing up in hiding with supposed Death Eater and mass-murderer Sirius Black, Harry is now eleven and ready to start his first year at Hogwarts... and heaven help that school.
Review: This story is the best of its category, i.e. "Sirius avoids Azkaban, kidnaps Harry and raises him in hiding", that I've ever read. All the events around Voldemort's first fall are explored here and brought in context with Sirius' feelings and reactions, for Part 1 is told from Sirius' POV, whereas Part 2 is told from Harry's. The author shows Sirius emotional journey from shell-shocked to mature but still mischievous and well up to the task of raising Harry, even with the rest of the wizarding world out for his blood. Several narrow escapes increase the tension until Harry, as befitting a true Marauder, enters Hogwarts and strikes out on an adventure all his own. Too bad Part 2 seems to have been abandoned. I would have dearly loved to see this storyline continued.

Summary: The war has been raging for 22 years. Voldemort has taken Azkaban, destroyed the Ministry, and massacred innocents in Diagon Alley. The government is in pieces, the Aurors are crippled, and the Order is struggling to hold the world together. Little stands between the Dark Lord and final victory, save the bonds between four friends - bonds by which the Wizarding world will live or die.
Review: I cannot recommend these novels enough. Robin is an extraordinary author with a strong liking for Sirius who is cast as the hero of all these AU pieces. In each story, he gets the chance to win his life back after Azkaban, and matures instead of sinking into despair. Harry, clearly filling a supporting role, also grows up far faster and learns what responsibility means. Style, imagination, characterizations, relationships and character developments are all spot-on and offer a look into a different world in which old elements come together to create something new. Especially 'The Unbroken Universe' is outstanding in its ambition, attention to detail and creativity, and finally affords Sirius the pivotal part I've always wished for him and the Marauders to hold in J. K. Rowling's world.

Summary: If Lucius Malfoy got to Peter Pettigrew before Sirius could, Sirius would be a bookshop owner, Remus would have a steady job, and one day, when Harry Potter was eight-and-a-half years old, they might kidnap him from the Dursleys...
Review: Sam's "Stealing Harry" universe is brilliant in its consistency and imagination. Here, Sirius Black is not a broken man, and Remus Lupin has never known the deprivations of loneliness and poverty. When they find in each other the man they love, it is far from dramatics or angst, and feels more like a comfortable set of clothes one slips into. I've found that I rather miss Hermoine and Ron during Harry's new adventures, but the interactions between Ravenclaw Padma Patil, Hufflepuff Draco Malfoy, Gryffindor Neville Longbottom and Slytherin Harry Potter are a nice substitute and offer an intriguingly different view on the books' plots we already know. Well-written and hard to stop reading - too bad the story's been abandoned and ends mid-Harry's 3rd year at Hogwarts.

Review: Harry Potter fandom is famous for its wacky pairings, and crackfic aside (Giant Squid, anyone?), this story certainly occupies a spot well outside of ordinary ships. Argus Filch has alway had an almost disturbing fondness for his cat, and is it so unbelievable that said cat sees and appreciates a side of him that Harry and his friends are never privy to? Mrs Norris' feelings for her owner are outside the acceptable, the human norm, and like a beautiful, ethereal creature from a fairytale, at one magical moment in time, she reaches out across the chasm - for him.

Summary: Harry's leaving for Hogwarts after Christmas, but with Sirius growing more remote by the day he doesn’t know if he can. Not to mention the sick feeling in his own stomach when he thinks about leaving Sirius alone.
Review: Taelyn Hawker, as always, delivers an adventure with perfect characterizations, style, and atmosphere. The story starts out adhering close to the OotP canon, but Sirius and Harry realizing and acknowledging that they're in love with each other over Christmas at 12 Grimmauld Place changes many of the following events in book #5. Taelyn's Sirius insists on waiting, for Harry is only 15 years old at the beginning, but the challenges Harry faces at the Ministry abruptly end his childhood. Slight influences from Telanu's 'Tea Series' are undeniable, but otherwise the story is entirely original and so full of potential that the sudden end after chapter 4 is rather painful.

Summary: Despite having feelings for 'The Boy Who Lived', Snape never expected anything to come out of it - until his spying is revealed and a clandestine affair with his student commences.
Review: I've always felt horribly torn about this series, for Harry is only 15 when he and Snape admit to feeling something for each other. It is wonderfully well-written, Snape's vulnerabilities - as witnessed through Harry's eyes - and Harry's teenaged insecurity and stubborn determination are almost tangible. Telanu's Snape is not entirely canon, but her grasp of his changes of mood from calm dignity to cold fury, screaming anger or a wondering sort of contentment makes him even more real than Rowling's books. Her Harry fights for what he wants, he grows up and sometimes shows a hint of ruthlessness that is disquieting. Unfortunately, the final two installments in the series are not at all what I expected, but all in all, the series - as disputed as it is - is a must-read in this fandom.

Review: Faren's trilogy mostly reads like a travel novel full of exotic places. Sirius, determined to raise Harry and prepare him for his destiny, shows him the world. Returning to Britain feels like returning to a cage, and they exchange a world full of limitless possibilities for one in which fate rules supreme, for the author - unfortunately - has decided to stay as close to (mirrored) canonical events as possible, given the changed circumstances. The story might have been served better with an entirely different plot, but perfect grammar, good characterizations, OCs that feel like real people, deftly handled changing POVs, and the tangible love between Harry and the only father figure he's ever known still make the trilogy a wholly enjoyable read.
