Highlander was the series that truly made me a media fan as it was my stepping stone into fandom in general. Before I fell for the show, I'd associated slash only with Star Trek and had no idea that it could - and has - translated into the worlds of pretty much all tv shows, movies and books. In contrast to a lot of people, while I did learn about slash via the Duncan MacLeod/Methos pairing, Methos was not my favorite character from the beginning. No, I started with season 1 and was happy with the sense of family Duncan, Tessa and Richie excuded, loved Darius and Joe Dawson, never felt very comfortable with Anne and grew to like irresponsible Amanda. That doesn't mean that I'm not a fan of Methos - it does mean, though, that I abhor stories in which Methos is built up as the hero to the detriment of Duncan. The show was about MacLeod - admittedly only if you disregard its last season with its female guest stars du jour - and while he has grown almost unbearably rigid in his moral code over the years, he's still the good guy, and nowhere near stupid. I hope my recommendations reflect that. I do blame the common misconception in fandom upon the droves of Methos-fans who never watched more than the episodes his character starred in and who nonetheless feel capable of writing Duncan/Methos slash.

Review: Diana DeShaun was one of the first authors to really get me into Highlander slash. Her Methos is not always ready to run, and her Duncan is not only pretty, but also intelligent. Furthermore, she likes to include Duncan's extended 'family' in her plots which makes her protagonists' outlook much more positive than the fandom norm. Her characters are not alone in an indifferent world and are all that much stronger for it. Her explanation as to how to 'cheat' the Game in "Transcendence" has always struck me as one I wish we'd been presented with on the show - it gives reasons to hope that in the end, there will not simply be one and that mythical 'prize' no one really cares about.

Review: Fenris' story is a lighthearted bit of fun that not only made me suffer with the boys (heat, sweat, and simply no privacy, damn!), but also laugh uncontrollably. Ornithology can be very educational, it seems, and I wouldn't say no to one of those developed posters, I swear.

Review: Merry Lynne's "Reconciliation Cyle" focuses on what we've seen only glimpses of in the series - the depth of the chasm between Duncan and Methos that was opened with the return of Kronos and the other Horsemen. I will be forever grateful to the show that they did address the topic as carefully as they did with the events of "Forgive our Trespasses" and "The Modern Prometheus" and made it clear that there was a conflict going on behind the scenes that had to be worked through before they could be friends again. Merry's storyline is a depiction of said conflict and its resolution, and her style and characterizations leave in in awe. I know it's highly unlikely, but I still harbor faint hopes that "Completion", the third installment in the series, will be finished one day. Outstanding.

Review: My love for Monica's stories is as old as my fascination with Highlander. My taste in fan fiction might have changed a little since then, but to me "Tribal Rituals" and "The Dilation Collection" will always stand synonymous for the fandom. Unfortunately, her "Domesticity Series" will forever be tainted for me as she once posted a short outline of how she wanted the series to end - an ending that clashed mightily with my expectations. Her website doesn't make any mention of her having left the fandom, but her mailbox is full and is evidently not being checked, plus here hasn't been an update since 2001. Which is sad, really, because she is very good at depicting the little things in day-to-day life as well as Duncan and Methos' moments of intimacy, and makes them appear more approachable than any other author I've encountered in this fandom.

Review: I've always liked those two stories because of the fact that Connor MacLeod stars so prominently in them, which is strange in itself - I've never really liked Connor, and I cannot even give a reason for said dislike. Still, it is very entertaining to see him interact with his cousin and the man he at first assumes is Duncan's student - until he learns who 'Adam Pierson' truly is. What I don't like so much is that the Duncan and Methos of this storyline are, on occasion, far too emotional, and that especially Duncan is depicted as far weaker than I see him. Nonetheless, both stories are certainly worth reading.

Review: Zen&nancy's stories were among the first slash stories I ever read on the internet, and whenever I think of their writing I get deeply nostalgic. Their "Left Of Center" series taught me what the NC-17 rating was for, and I was fascinated with their stylistic choice of presenting both Methos and Duncan's point of view by writing the same story from two different standpoints. Today I have to admit that the formatting could use some rework, and I now discover typos and homophones in the stories that I was totally blind to in 1997, but still - Zen&nancy's stories are classics. Their aptitude for combining romance and angst is very hard to resist. Enjoy.
