due south fan fiction

Due South has managed, despite not being an US tv show, to attract a fanbase rivalled by few others. All in all, that is not very surprising - it has a lot of lovable little quirks that endear it to almost everyone and showcases a partnership between two very different male characters, Benton Fraser and Ray Kowalski. Fraser, the quintessential Mountie, comes to Chicago on the trails of the killers of his father and ends up staying, partnered in succession with two very different American cops who are both appalled and fascinated with his influence on the parts of Chicago that he comes in contact with. He is a man too good to be true - add to that a touch of the supernatural and Paul Gross and Callum Keith Rennie's performances, and voilà: enough UST to drown in. The actors were aware of the slash written about the show (just look at the blooper tapes) and comfortable enough to play with it. Still, to get the whole picture one has to watch the entire series. Fraser is shaped by his experiences in Chicago as well as by his friendship with his first partner, Ray Vecchio, and authors who want to get a grasp of his personality cannot simply ignore two seasons of cases, successes, tragedies and human interaction.

The main pairing on this page is
Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski.

Auburn

livejournal: ljauburnnothenna
Title: This Must Be The Place offsite Story Length: ~ 110 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski Time Frame: Post-Series
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst Recommended: 14 Mar 2007
Summary: Ray takes the long way home.
Review: Auburn's story is written from RayK's point of view, and his observations of the stops and starts in his and Fraser's slowly deepening relationship paint a very authentic picture of their lives post-series. Circumstances keep them apart at first until they finally reach a compromise they can both live with - without losing who and what they are. Furthermore, the author is very good at giving an earnest, but tongue-in-cheek account of Ray's cases in Chicago and at depicting a tangible feel of loneliness and isolation. In short, this story is one of the most believable "and they moved to Canada together" fanfics you can imagine.

Title: The Course (story index) offsite Story Length: ~ 185 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski Time Frame: Post-Season 4
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, First Time Recommended: 01 May 2001
Summary: A week after the end of their quest, Fraser finds Ray's weather diary - and realizes he almost passed up a chance at happiness.
Review: While Aristide claims that they wrote this story to 'cure' Bone of the plot virus, the plot isn't the main focus of "The Course". The focal point is rather the slow evolution of Fraser and Ray's intimate relationship during whose course Ray learns that he cannot guard his heart forever just to ward of the mere possibilty of future hurt, while Fraser throws himself wholeheartedly, almost recklessly, into the same future, for once following his emotions instead of reason. This story shows us a beautiful world unfolding that brings our boys even closer together, and in doing so conveys a tangible feeling of warmth to the reader. Beautiful.

Caroline Alert

Title: The Alchemy Series [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] | Poem for a Winter's Night Story Length: ~ 1.831 KB
Series: "Alchemy Series" and sequel Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes, graphic m/m sex, references to past rape, violence
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski, Ray Kowalski / OMC, Ray Vecchio & OFC Time Frame: Season 3 AU
Genres: Angst, AU, Drama, Episode Related, Hurt/Comfort, Romance Recommended: 17 Aug 2000
Summary: Post-episode 3x06 - "Bounty Hunter", Fraser and Ray discover that finding love is hard enough... and that love, once found, can be easily misplaced.
Review: Caroline Alert's "Alchemy Series" hooked me onto this fandom back in 2000. In retrospect, I have to admit that the percentage of angst, misunderstandings, drama and clichés is a bit overproportional, plus readers who loathe it when RayK's speech is written in dialect might not enjoy the stories very much, but aside from that, it is very obvious that this series was a labor of love. Despite the fact that Fraser and RayK's relationship is the focal point of "Alchemy", the supporting characters, most of all Ray Vecchio and Francesca, get also a chance to shine. It takes a bit getting used to, but the constant change of POV with each new section works very well for this novel. Fraser and Vecchio's friendship doesn't get neglected and due to the details of Vecchio's undercover assignment made up by the author, his knee-jerk reaction to his best friend being gay makes sense and does not read as character-bashing. Highly addictive and unputdownable.

Crysothemis

Title: True North Story Length: ~ 375 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski, Ray Kowalski / OMC Time Frame: Post-Series
Genres: Angst, Character Study, Drama Recommended: 14 Mar 2007
Summary: Before her brother and Ray can start on their quest for the Hand of Franklin, Maggie Mackenzie unwittingly reveals Fraser's deepest secret.
Review: Crysothemis' Ray is a bit slow on the uptake, and at first somewhat careless with Fraser's feelings, but his voyage of disovery - of his feelings, of Inuvik as a place he can learn to call home - is described beautifully and as an inevitable conclusion of his realization that he needs Fraser to be himself. Maggie has a central role as the catalyst of the subsquent developments, and Inuvik - rather than being clichéd - feels like a real place. While I would have wished for RayK's sake that he hadn't had to give up being a detective, that derogates little from the overall quality of the story.

Journey
e-mail: journeyds@yahoo.com Website: Journey's due South Fan Fiction @ mrks.org
Title: Family Portrait offsite Story Length: ~ 424 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski Time Frame: Season 3 AU
Genres: AU, Friendship, Romance Recommended: 14 Mar 2007
Summary: A widowed policeman meets a Canadian Mountie in Chicago.
Review: Journey's story is about family, i.e. about an AU Ray who's lost Stella and now has to raise his two children on his own. Thankfully, the author circumnavigates all the pratfalls of writing kid!fic; Kathy and Stevie feel like real kids and - like their father - manage to breach Fraserís usual barriers with little effort. Ray is characterized equally well; being a parent has made him more mature and responsible, although also less willing to take the risk of committing to a man, and Fraser has difficulties not letting past disappointments color his perception. Long, inevitable and sweet.

Title: A Thousand Words Story Length: ~ 96 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski Time Frame: Season 4
Genres: Episode Related, Romance Recommended: 17 Dec 2000
Summary: After the 27th's Christmas party in episode 4x08 - "Good for the Soul", Ray has a special evening planned for Fraser. It turns out to be more special than he could have imagined.
Title: Somewhere Else to Be Story Length: ~ 337 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski Time Frame: AU not specified
Genres: AU, Drama, First Time, Romance Recommended: 17 Dec 2000
Summary: Fraser's not a Mountie, Ray's not a cop, but things once linked remain that way - in any universe, they are meant to be partners.
Title: When the Ice Goes Out | Moonrise Story Length: ~ 205 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski Time Frame: Post-Series
Genres: Angst, Drama Recommended: 17 Dec 2000
Summary: Long past episode 4x13 - "Call of the Wild", Fraser and Ray each try to make new lives for themselves, and discover that life both is and isn't as simple as it seems, and that one should never make assumptions, even about good friends.
Review: Kellie is one of those few extraordinary writers whose stories are all well worth reading. She once said she regretted writing slash in this fandom before RayK showed up in Season 3, so you might want to skip her earliest works, but apart from that, you can't go wrong in chosing her fanfic. Add to that the fact that what she considers a "short story" regularly exceeds 200 KB, and her due South fan fiction is something to really sink one's teeth into. She also writes very hot sex scenes, has a deft hand at developing AUs, and always keeps RayK and Fraser in character. Furthermore, she appears to like - and empathize with - them both equally much, which is reflected in her stories. Enjoy.

Northern Comfort
Title: Northern Comfort Story Length: ~ 213 KB
Series: Part 1 of Northern Comfort Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex, references to past rape
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Billy Tallent Time Frame: Season 4 & Post-"Hard Core Logo"
Genres: Angst, Drama, First Time, X-over with "Hard Core Logo" Recommended: 17 Dec 2000
Summary: Shortly before the events of episode 4x01 - "Dr. Longball", Billy Tallent and Benton Fraser collide when they're both at a low ebb in their lives (or think they are), and find comfort in each other for a night.
Title: No Secrets Story Length: ~ 230 KB
Series: Part 2 of Northern Comfort Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski Time Frame: Season 4 & Post-"Hard Core Logo"
Genres: Angst, Drama, Romance, X-over with "Hard Core Logo" Recommended: 17 Dec 2000
Summary: Post-episode 4x05 - "The Ladies Man", Fraser finds that after his experiences with Billy Tallent, he can no longer sublimate his feelings for Ray, but he doesn't believe those feelings will be reciprocated.
Title: Shadows Fade offsite Story Length: ~ 792 KB
Series: Part 3 of Northern Comfort Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: references to past rape
Pairing: Billy Tallent / Brian Hawkins Time Frame: Post-"Hard Core Logo"
Genres: Angst, Drama, First Time, X-over with "Hard Core Logo" & "Tales of the City" Recommended: 14 Mar 2007
Summary: Billy Tallent teams up with a lawyer in San Francisco to work on his custody case, and gets a lot more than he bargained for.
Review: Since the first two parts of this trilogy were written by Kellie and the third is a collaboration with AuKestrel, the length of these stories is not surprising, nor is the fascination with other tv characters portrayed by Paul Gross and Callum Keith Rennie. While in the beginning the amount of angst and emotional soul-bearing gets a bit heavy, the exploration of Billy Tallent's state of mind post-Hard Core Logo works extremely well for pulling the reader in and getting him interested. "Shadows Fade" manages easily with no more than a few references to Fraser's existence, focusing instead on Billy's encounter and growing closeness to Brian Hawkins who is the right person to help Billy complete the healing process begun by Fraser back in Chicago. Long, with a deep-seated love for the protagonists, lots of imagination and a tangible enjoyment of exploring and expanding limited canon characterizations.

Speranza (aka Francesca)
e-mail: cesca@trickster.org Website: Speranza's Fiction
livejournal: ljcesperanza
Title: Anatomically Correct offsite Story Length: ~ 49 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski Time Frame: Season 3-4
Genres: Drama Recommended: 01 May 2001
Summary: They all wanted their very own Mountie doll, manners and batteries included, horse sold separately.
Title: Eight Sessions offsite Story Length: ~ 207 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: violence
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski Time Frame: Season 3-4
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, Character Study, Drama Recommended: 17 May 2002
Summary: Fraser and Ray have to attend eight mandatory sessions of counceling after a shooting in the line of duty that claimed six lives.
Review: Speranza has written a lot in this fandom, but not all of her due South stories appeal to me. These two, however, do. In both stories, her Ray Kowalski has emotional depths one already got glimpses of from the series, and an instinctive understanding of Fraser's breaking points no one else can rival. He is able to see beneath the polished Mountie exterior and still want 'the nutty guy underneath'. By expert use of his POV, the author lets the readers experience Ray's frustration, realizations and fears, and makes him and Fraser truly three-dimensional people. Add to that flawless characterizations and style, a good balance between humor and drama, and hilarious instances like Fraser's battle of will with his therapist, and you'll be captivated.

the Hoyden
e-mail: thehoyden@livejournal.com Website: like an angel sleeping it off @ The Burrow
livejournal: ljthehoyden
Title: Academic Punk offsite Story Length: ~ 57 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski Time Frame: AU not specified
Genres: AU, Character Study, Friendship Recommended: 14 Mar 2007
Summary: After suffering a crushing professional and personal disappointment, Professor Fraser is hired by the University of Chicago.
Review: The author has a very good grasp of Fraser and Ray's characters, and the transference of their personalities into the world of academia is superbly done. The explanation of why their paths diverged from the canon ones we know is very plausible, and despite how ingrained being a Mountie is for the Benton Fraser we know, the reader doesn't feel as if there's something lacking. Ray - SR Kowalski - effortlessly overcomes Fraser's emotional barriers, and Fraser becomes the famous modern American novelist's first real friend. All in all, The Hoyden's version of their duet is compelling and a pleasure to read.
