battlestar galactica: the original series fan fiction

Battlestar Galactica: The Original Series was the first tv series I've ever been a fan of. When my brother and I were still teenagers, we had seen the multi-part episodes cut into "movies", and so we were pathetically grateful that our aunt recorded several episodes for us when the series was finally shown on satellite tv. We bought and read all the novelizations and re-watched the tapes - very much to my parents' chagrin. In short, I was a Starbuck and Apollo fangirl long before I knew about slash, so it's no surprise I started looking for fan fiction once I'd been absorbed by the slash fandom.
It's also no surprise that I am a verbose defender of the original series, a supporter of Richard Hatch's project (that sadly never came to fruition), and am more than skeptic towards the series' "re-imagining". As pretty as Jamie Bamber is, he is no Apollo, and the whole gender-switching thing in regard to Starbuck and Boomer makes me foam at the mouth. But let's not go into this here.

The main pairing on this page is
Apollo / Starbuck.

Title: No Matter What Story Length: ~ 95 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Apollo / Starbuck Time Frame: Post-Series, Pre-"Galactica 1980"
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, Drama, Established Relationship Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: When Sheba finds out that Apollo and Starbuck are lovers, she blackmails Starbuck into leaving the Galactica in the hopes of getting Apollo all to herself.
Review: This story is pretty much the antithesis of the one listed above. Apollo has the support of his family and friends and instead faces opposition at another front. Well, perhaps it's the fangirl in me, but I've never grown terribly fond of Sheba; I always felt that she was trespassing where she didn't belong. Claire takes that even further and lets Apollo and Starbuck suffer as the consequence. The amount of Sheba-bitchifying is a bit extreme, but it works well within the context of this story.

Heidi Maroney
e-mail: earth_to_heidi@yahoo.com Archived at: By Your Command v2.0
Title: Broken offsite Story Length: ~ 117 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes
Pairing: Apollo / Starbuck Time Frame: Post-Series, Pre-"Galactica 1980"
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, Character Study, Drama Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: Apollo breaks up with Starbuck - only to go missing in action soon thereafter.
Review: Heidi takes up one scenario what I have always wondered about: Can Starbuck be faithful? And if he slips, how will Apollo react? Not surprisingly, there is a lot of heartbreak and lashing out in pain - on both sides. I haven't read all of Heidi's stories and kept only a few of those that I have read, but "Broken" stands out and is just the right combination of emotional anguish and happy ending to be one of my all-time favorites.

Title: Card Games offsite Story Length: ~ 49 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Apollo / Starbuck Time Frame: Post-Series, Pre-"Galactica 1980"
Genres: Angst, Drama, Character Study Recommended: 23 May 2000
Summary: Apollo gives Starbuck an invitation that leads to something new and interesting.
Review: Stories like this one are rare in this fandom - no emotional and/or physical hurt or trauma, no patrols, no Cylons - instead there are a lot of Pyramid cards, streamers and old family tales. This is the story to come back to after having encountered the darker side of this fandom: introspective but not heartbroken, with an undercurrent of warmth and comfort. Enjoy.

Josephine Darcy
e-mail: JustJosephine@yahoo.com Website: Josephine's Place
Title: Sacrifice offsite Story Length: ~ 257 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Apollo / Starbuck Time Frame: Post-Series, Pre-"Galactica 1980"
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, First Time Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: Apollo and Starbuck have to go on a diplomatic mission for the Fleet and pretend to be married to fit in with the society of their new trading partners.
Review: Josephine says that this story started out as a cliché, but managed to overcome that, and oh how right she is! Long, involved, this fanfic has it all - alien aphrodisiacs, Apollo and Starbuck hiding their attraction from each other, acrobatic rescues high above the ground plus actual repercussions from Apollo's encounter with the Ship of Lights. "Sacrifice" proves that Josephine is not only an exeptionally gifted writer in the "Sentinel" fandom, but in anything she touches. I can't help but wish that she'd write more.

Karo (aka Katy Rose)

Title: Herald the Spring offsite Story Length: ~ 45 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Apollo / Starbuck Time Frame: Post-Series, Pre-"Galactica 1980"
Genres: Action/Adventure, First Time, Humor Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: Apollo and Starbuck check out a dying planet and learn that not all interpersonal concepts translate well.
Review: A very original storyline, good characterizations and an undercurrent of fond amusement turn this fanfic into the feel-good story of the Battlestar Galactica: The Original Series fandom. Apollo and Starbuck finally admit what they feel for each other, and that is a gift that keeps on giving... so to speak. Hilarious, tender, wonderful. Don't miss it.

Title: Headache [1], [2], [3], [4], [5],
[6] (author page @ skyehawke) offsite
Story Length: ~ 257 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes
Pairing: Apollo / Starbuck Time Frame: Post-Series, Pre-"Galactica 1980"
Genres: Angst, Drama, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 06 Apr 2006
Summary: Adama's reaction to discovering that Apollo and Starbuck are lovers is only resolved when he has to face up to a choice between his son and his prejudice.
Review: Starry Diadem is a very prolific writer and still active in the fandom. She's very good at portraying heartache and equally good at coming up with original scenarios that link seamlessly with what we know of the Colonies' past. Unfortunately, she likes creating rifts between Apollo and his father and/or the rest of the fleet with Apollo as the wronged party. "Mapping the Genome" (found on her website) is a good example - flawless writing, brilliant research... and lovingly portrayed interpersonal conflicts. Still, I've read all her stories and can recommend them all save the third part of the "Mask Sequence" which makes me incoherently furious for reasons I don't want to go into here.
